Haleon today announced its commitment to The Climate Pledge, as part of its ongoing efforts to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, aligned to guidance from The Climate Pledge and Race to Zero.
Co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism in 2019, The Climate Pledge is a commitment by companies to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 - a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement’s goal of 2050.
Haleon’s approach to reducing carbon emissions forms a central part of its sustainability strategy, which is focussed on tackling the social and environmental barriers to better everyday health. The company’s carbon reduction efforts are underpinned by two mediumterm targets1 :
Since its launch in July 2022 as a standalone company 100% focused on consumer health, Haleon has made steady progress against these targets. In 2022, the company achieved the milestone of reaching 100% renewable electricity across all the sites it owns and controls through purchasing Renewable Electricity Certificates, signing Purchase Power Agreements, and directly generating renewable electricity. This move to renewable electricity has been underpinned by efforts across its manufacturing sites, including in Suzhou, which achieved ‘carbon neutral’ certification2 for its Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Additionally, half of Haleon’s manufacturing sites – including in Cape Town and Nairobi – have installed solar power facilities.
Going forwards, Haleon aims to continue reducing carbon emissions across its manufacturing sites, while taking concerted action across its whole value chain to reach net-zero carbon. The company is partnering with its suppliers to support their decarbonisation efforts and is focussed on reducing greenhouse gas-intensive materials and replacing them with lower carbon alternatives where available.
Climate change is putting the health of people and the environment under severe strain, which is why we are firmly committed to tackling carbon emissions across our value chain. Today’s announcement signals our commitment to build on the progress we’ve made to date, and we look forward to collaborating with The Climate Pledge community as we continue our journey towards net-zero carbon.
We’re delighted to have Haleon join a community of over 400 Climate Pledge signatories who have committed to doing the hard work of decarbonizing their operations to reach net-zero carbon by 2040. Signatories of the Pledge are helping create a low-carbon economy across different industries, including consumer health, and we look forward to working together with Haleon to meet this ambitious goal, together.
Signatories to The Climate Pledge agree to:
